Born August 8, 1866 Matthew Henson was a history in the making. Henson was born in Charles County, Maryland. Henson was born to two free African-American sharecroppers. Losing his mother at a very young age he had some rough patches in his early life. One being picking up everything and moving to Washington D.C to start a hole new life when he was only 4 years of age. Henson, at the age of 11 picked himself up and set out on his own way, again only at the age of 11. After walking from D.C to Baltimore, Maryland Henson found a job at a restaurant. But his job career did not really take off until he would find the job becoming a cabin boy aboard the ship, Katie Hines.
